On August 18, 2011 the negotiations between the Russian ZZGT (Zavoljskiy Zavod Gusenichnikh Tyagachey) and STEYR MOTORS have been closed successfully in a personal meeting of General Director Valentin V. Kopalkin and Chief Executive Rudolf Mandorfer.
As a result of the process the Austrian engine manufacturer will start to develop and deliver power packs, which are a perfect match for the quite special needs of the new customer. In comparison to its competitors STEYR MOTORS was able to win the contract due to the high competence to customize its engines down to the robust core engine, the widely renowned M1 Monoblock. The vehicle that will be equipped with the new power pack will be used within the Russian Ministry of Disaster Control, EMERCON, to help during the fire fighting against forest fires and to support the Russian citizens during natural disasters in impassable terrain.
Due to EMERCON’s good experience with STEYR engines gained during the engine production based under license of the STEYR M1 4-cylinder engine by GAZ in Russia, the Ministry decided to once again rely on the robust and long living STEYR Monoblock engines.
For the ZZGT vehicle STEYR MOTORS not only supplies and develops the engines but will play the role of a combined supplier which provides the whole engine-transmission-part including the necessary electronics, control systems and even the operation instruments. Particularly the flexibility and the high potential of STEYR MOTORS to develop a complete package was the decisive vote to assign the contract to the Austrian specialist.
Already within 2011 the Russian customer will be supplied with prototypes to be used in fine-tuning and field tests as well as with a start series; for 2012 the Ministry announced further package orders in series productions and also the application of this package in other vehicles. STEYR MOTORS GmbH is the diesel engine specialist that emerged from the former Steyr- Daimler-Puch group. Decades of specialized development experience and production of diesel engines for all types of commercial and military vehicles culminated in the successful development of the STEYR M1 Monoblock engine family.
