American Express Global Corporate Payments will also manage Allianz Global Assistance Australia’s payment platforms for both corporate expenses and medical travel costs. Allianz Global Assistance Australia specialises in providing emergency medical assistance services including repatriation for Australian and New Zealand citizens from anywhere in the world. The travel requirements of this service can be complicated. In the case of a medical emergency Allianz Global Assistance Australia needs to retrieve a travel booking originally made by its travel insurance client and adjust the return booking to accommodate the patient’s medical condition, which may include premium methods of travel.

“Our travel needs can be slightly unusual in that we have to meet the equally important needs of our own employees who are travelling for business, as well as our medical insurance customers who may require medical repatriation. We deliberately sought a reliable travel management company with a global presence, and found that in American Express” said John Myler, CEO Australia and New Zealand, Allianz Global Assistance. “American Express’ geographic reach and ability to deliver savings through access to comprehensive content and negotiated rates, were key factors in the decision making process. Also, by working together from a business travel and corporate payments perspective, American Express was able to offer additional convenience and alignment with an end-to-end travel and payment solution.”

In order to support the unpredictable nature of Allianz Global Assistance’s travel requirements, American Express established a dedicated, local, 24-hour, support service team, which works closely with the medical teams. The charges being placed on the newly-established Business Travel Accounts and corporate cards, and the data associated with those, are now carefully managed and reported upon. This provides Allianz Global Assistance Australia with full visibility of travel spending which, in turn, helps when negotiating with airline, hotel, and car rental providers for future rates.

“The complexities of repatriation, including variations across airline ticketing, client bookings, currencies and payment methods, require a reliable and highly experienced team of travel consultants to ensure the data and charges are carefully managed,” said David Reimer, Vice President and General Manager, American Express Global Business Travel, Asia Pacific. “We have only just recently begun to work with Allianz Global Assistance Australia and have already been able to demonstrate our value by providing structure and transparency across medical travel and corporate spending”.
