Bupa has announced that Roger Davis will take up the position of non-executive Chairman when Lord Leitch steps down at the end of 2018. The announcement follows a comprehensive recruitment process led by the Board’s Nomination and Governance Committee.
Roger joined the Bupa Board in July 2015 and has extensive, global business experience acquired during a wide-ranging career in financial services.
In addition to being a non-executive Director of Bupa, Roger is Chairman of Sainsbury’s Bank and a Non-Executive Director of Experian plc, the global information services company. Roger has over 20 years of experience in large global businesses. He was previously Chief Executive Officer of Barclays UK Bank and a Board member of Barclays plc. Prior to that, he was Chairman and Chief Executive of Barclays Capital Asia Pacific. Roger spent a number of years in investment banking in London and Asia with positions including Managing Director of India for Jardine Fleming, and Chief Executive Officer of BZW Asia Pacific.
In May 2017, Lord Leitch announced his intention to step down at the end of 2018. During his tenure as Chairman, the Company has grown from revenues of £4bn in 2006 to £12bn in 2017 and more than trebled the number of customers served.

I am delighted that Roger will be taking over as Chair when I step down. I look forward to working with him over the remainder of the year to ensure a smooth transition.”
Roger Davis said, “It is a huge privilege to become Chairman of Bupa. I’ve very much enjoyed my time as a Board member during the past three years and I look forward to working with Evelyn, the Board and the Executive Team taking the organisation forward.”
Bupa also confirmed that Lawrence Churchill CBE, the Senior Independent Director (SID), will step down from the Board on 16 May and will be succeeded as SID by Clare Thompson. Clare joined the Board in May 2015 and is Chair of Bupa's Audit Committee. She has a broad range of experience in finance and insurance and was a Partner at PwC from 1988 until 2011.
Lord Leitch said, “I would like to thank Lawrence for his nine years of committed, diligent and loyal service to Bupa. We are delighted that Clare is taking on the SID position.”
Lord Leitch joined the Bupa Board in May 2005 and was appointed Bupa Chairman in November 2006. His is Chairman of FNZ Ltd and was previously Chairman of Intrinsic Financial Services. He was Chairman at Scottish Widows PLC, Deputy Chairman at Lloyds Banking Group PLC, Senior Independent Director at UBM plc and on the Board of Old Mutual Wealth. During his executive career, he was a CEO at Zurich Financial Services and Chairman of Threadneedle Asset Management. He was Chairman of the ABI, Chancellor of Carnegie College, Chairman of the Centre for Modern Families think tank, and a strategic advisor to the Prince of Wales’ charity, PRIME. He authored the Leitch Review of Skills in 2006.

He is Chairman of Sainsbury’s Bank, Global RadioData Communications (GRC) and the Future for Heroes charity. Roger will be stepping down as a Non-Executive Director of Experian plc at this year’s AGM in July and was Chairman of Gem Diamonds until June 2017. He was previously Chief Executive Officer of Barclays UK Bank, and a Board member of Barclays plc. Prior to that, he was Chairman and Chief Executive of Barclays Capital Asia Pacific. Roger spent a number of years in investment banking in London and Asia with positions including Managing Director of India for Jardine Fleming, and Chief Executive Officer of BZW Asia Pacific.
Lawrence Churchill joined the Bupa Board in July 2009 and became the Senior Independent Director in May 2015. Lawrence is Chairman of the Independent Governance Committee of Prudential Assurance Company and a Trustee of Prudential Corporate Trustee Limited. He is also Chairman of the Pensions Policy Institute and a Trustee of International Longevity Centre (UK). Lawrence was previously Chairman of the Board of the Financial Services Compensation Scheme, Chairman of the NEST Corporation and the Pension Protection Fund, a member of the Board for Actuarial Standards, Chief Executive of Zurich Financial Services UK, Executive Chairman of UNUM, CEO of NatWest Life and Investments, and a Director of the Association of British Insurers.
Clare Thompson joined the Bupa Board in May 2015. Clare is Chair of Bupa's Audit Committee and is a member of Bupa's Risk and Nomination & Governance Committees. She is also a member of the UK Regulated Entities Board. Clare is a Non-Executive Director of Direct Line Group and Retail Charity Bonds plc, a Non-Executive member of the Partnership Board of Miller Insurance Services LLP and a Trustee and Treasurer of the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC). Clare was a Partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) from 1988 until 2011. Whilst she was at PwC, she held several senior and high-profile roles, particularly within the insurance sector. Clare is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.
