Mandatory Private Health Insurance For Expatriates In Qatar

Qatar becomes the latest country to mandate private health insurance for expats, ahead of the 2022 World Cup.

Qatar employers will now be required by law to provide private health insurance cover for expats and their families.

There are a huge number of expats and foreign workers living in Qatar. Qatari nationals account for only 10% of the population.

Currently foreign residents, expatriates and visitors can access public health care by paying a small fee for a government health card. Employers not obliged to provide any additional private health insurance.

The new law takes effect in approximately 6 months’ time and will also require all visitors to purchase a health insurance plan, whilst in country.
