Allianz Worldwide Care Launches Interactive Map To Showcase Global Presence And Partnerships With Local Insurers

International health insurer Allianz Worldwide Care has launched an interactive online map highlighting the key partnerships which it has established to provide multinational clients with locally compliant healthcare plans. The map, which is available on the company’s homepage www.allianzworldwidecare.com also shows the location of the company’s offices, its regionally based Doctors, Network Managers and sales team, and links through to its global medical network of hospitals, clinics and doctors.

Claude Daboul, Director of Sales, Marketing and Operations explained “We establish partnerships with local insurers in countries where our clients have staff on assignment and where healthcare cover must be provided by a locally licensed insurer. A key benefit of being part of the Allianz Group means that very often we are able to partner with the local Allianz company in these countries, which speeds things up significantly”. In 2013, Allianz Worldwide Care established a number of new partnerships to be able to provide corporate clients with locally compliant products in:

  • Angola with Nova Sociedade de Seguros de Angola (NOSSA Seguros)
  • Argentina with sister company Allianz Argentina Cía. De Seguros S.A.
  • Panama with Acerta Compañia de Seguros
  • Saudi Arabia with sister company Allianz Saudi Fransi

This initiative is part of Allianz Worldwide Care’s continuing focus on providing its corporate clients with a truly global health insurance solution and follows similar partnerships already established in a number of countries including China, Australia, the Netherlands, Switzerland, the UAE, Algeria, Mozambique, and Mexico. The company also established its own branch in Qatar in 2012.

Daboul added “Establishing these relationships means that we can provide our clients with healthcare cover regardless of where their employees are based. Clients have the convenience of dealing with one company, rather than having to establish relationships with multiple insurers. We deal with the complexity of local regulatory requirements so that our clients don’t have to”.

African, European And Asian Cities Dominate The Top 10 Most Expensive Locations For Expatriates

Although more European cities dominate the world’s top costliest locations for expatriates, according to Mercer’s latest Cost of Living Survey, several cities in Asia are among the top 10 while Luanda holds the number one position. Mercer's 2013 Cost of Living Survey is one of the world’s most comprehensive, and is designed to help multinational companies and governments determine compensation allowances for their expatriate employees.

New York is used as the base city, and all cities are compared against it. Currency movements are measured against the US dollar. The survey covers 214 cities across five continents and measures the comparative cost of over 200 items in each location, including housing, transportation, food, clothing, household goods, and entertainment. The difference in cost for these items can be dramatic.

For example the cost of a cup of coffee in Managua, Nicaragua is $1.54 compared to $8.29 in Moscow; a fast food hamburger meal is $3.62 in Kolkata (Calcutta), India, versus $13.49 in Caracas, and a cinema ticket is $5.91 in Johannesburg compared to $20.10 in London. These are but a few examples of the thousands of comparisons to be found in Mercer’s full report that aid employers in setting cost of living and other expatriate allowances. Mercer produces individual cost of living and rental accommodation cost reports for each city surveyed.

The cost of expatriate housing is typically the biggest expense for employers, and it plays an important part in determining the rankings. The Russian capital of Moscow follows Luanda as the second most expensive city because of high costs for rental accommodation and imported goods and services commonly purchased by expatriates commanding a premium. A luxury two bedroom unfurnished apartment rental for one month in Moscow is $4,600 a month or 14 times as much than Karachi. Rounding out the top five most expensive cities for expatriate living, which also have pricey rental accommodations, are Tokyo, the Chad city Ndjamena, and Singapore.

“Recent world events, including economic and political upheavals, which resulted in currency fluctuations, cost inflation for goods and services, and volatility in accommodation prices have impacted these cities making them expensive,” said Barb Marder, Senior Partner and Mercer’s Global Mobility Practice Leader. “Despite being one of Africa’s major oil producers, Angola is a relatively poor country yet expensive for expatriates since imported goods can be costly. In addition, finding secure living accommodations that meet the standards of expatriates can be challenging and quite costly." The other cities appearing in Mercer’s list of top 10 costliest cities for expatriates are Hong Kong, Geneva, Bern and Zurich.

According to Ms. Marder, “A recent Mercer global mobility survey shows that all different types of international assignments are on the rise. Given the increasing numbers of business travelers, global ‘commuters’ and longer-term expatriates, companies are keeping a close eye on the cost of living for international assignees in different cities around the world. Organizations need to evaluate the impact of currency fluctuations, inflation, and political instability when sending employees on overseas assignments while ensuring they can facilitate the moves they need to drive the business results by offering fair and competitive compensation packages.” Currency fluctuations and the impact of inflation on goods and services have affected the cost of expatriate programs as well as the city rankings.

“Overall, the cost of living in cities across parts of Europe has gone up in the ranking as a result of the slight strengthening of local currencies against the US dollar, whereas in Asia about half of the cities went down in the ranking – Japan especially – due to local currencies’ weakening against the US dollar,” said Nathalie Constantin-Métral, Principal at Mercer with responsibility for compiling the survey ranking.

Four European cities are among the top 10 most expensive despite moderate price increases in most European countries. Switzerland remains one of the costliest locations for expatriates despite decreasing or stable accommodation costs and a robust Swiss franc. Some African cities rank high in Mercer’s 2013 survey, reflecting high living costs for expatriate employees. In the Americas, cities in South America are the most expensive locations for expatriates.

Some cities dropped in the ranking as a result of local currencies weakening against the US dollar such as Brazilian cities, while others jumped as a result of high inflation on goods and services and rentals. New York, the base city for Mercer’s Cost of Living ranking, is the most expensive city in the United States.

“Overall, US cities either remained stable in the ranking or have slightly decreased due to the movement of the US dollar against the majority of currencies worldwide,” explained Ms. Constantin-Métral. ”Yet several cities, including New York, moved up in the ranking due to a rise in the rental accommodation market.” Canadian cities generally moved down in the ranking this year as a result of a slight decrease of the Canadian dollar against the US dollar, and because the prices of goods and services increased at a lower pace than in New York.

iPMI Magazine Speaks With Philip Catterton, Managing Director, Integra Global

Philip Catterton Managing Director of Integra Global is an American with 25 years of experience both in capacity of working with and living himself as an expatriate since 1989. He is a founding member of Integra Global which was established in 1999. Philip has personally steered the company strategy and pioneered technical advancements including Integra Global being the first provider to offer online enrollment and the full scale implementation of Zaptag personal healthcare records.

As an American firmly grounded in Europe for over two decades, it has given him a unique perspective of not only what a comprehensive healthcare plan should include, but also how to embody the unique aspects of what North American, and globally expatriates are looking for in a quality plan.

What do your clients demand, and what do they receive?

Integra Global’s clients our “Members” choose our plans if they are looking for comprehensive coverage at an affordable price. Our clients are typically families and professionals that plan to live abroad for longer periods of time. They receive excellent coverage including superior wellness benefits, maternity, and inclusive emergency evacuation; easy accessibility to providers through our extensive direct bill networks globally, seamless online applications, billing and personalized customer service. Moreover, we are one of the few international healthcare providers that do not have specific limitations on chronic conditions, prescription drugs or outpatient treatments.

How can corporations improve and manage the life cycle of their expatriate workforce?

Comprehensive cover should be looked at not only as a necessity but as a perk. Quality healthcare insurance benefits are an important element in ones life, but to an expatriate and their family it has added value. Having the ability to seek treatment in one’s home country is something of significance to an expatriate.

Domestic employee or even Human Resource professionals may not comprehend the difficulties an expatriate may face in communication, cultural differences and general standards of facilities. Having the ability to go “home” for healthcare treatment should be a standard consideration of expatriates and their families, if the employer is interested in the long term commitment of the employee to the assignment abroad. Given the special circumstances employers face when hiring expatriates – including the cost of initial transportation and accommodation for the interview, moving abroad and perhaps paying housing, relocation expense, schools, local housing etc. healthcare insurance is a reasonable expenditure considering the overall expense of hiring.

As a perk this component to the overall compensation strategy can increase the longevity of the expats career, but for the human resource professional it can also result in savings should the expatriate leave. The costs incurred in finding a replacement may include for example, recruitment costs, down time, training, additional relocation expenses etc. All things considered considering healthcare insurance is normally an essential element of the employee agreement - it does not cost that much more to offer a high quality comprehensive insurance plan not only for the expatriate but their family as well, especially if it leads to increased employee satisfaction, higher moral and dedication to the assignment and company as a whole.

How do you think International Healthcare will be defined in the future?

Expatriates are becoming not just more common but are also staying out longer if not on a permanent basis. As this trend becomes more prevalent I think you will find that there will be more of a demand for more comprehensive quality cover. The emphasis in the future I think will be more on value, especially as it concerns the long-term value of quality health cover.

On a recent and highly subscribed LinkedIn discussion, it was suggested that: “There is a huge gap between underwriting and claims and everyone needs to start talking the same language”. What do you think?

It is important to be upfront and transparent when it comes to underwriting. I think this is where the misunderstandings come in on the claims side. Too often there is ambiguity of accepting an application and then later applying the terms. Customers often do not read or understand the fine print especially when it comes to insurance. And I don't think we should expect them to. Our approach is to have a completely transparent process from the beginning. And this is best done if Full Medical Underwriting is done at the time of application. In this way, everyone know the terms and conditions from the start and therefore there is little room for misunderstandings at times of claims.

Over the next 5 years, which geographic markets and industries will represent your core strategic focus, and why?

Integra Global has focused its efforts on expats from the USA and in key areas around the world including Europe, Asia and the Middle East. The global trends for expatriates are in China, India, Brazil and Russia which remain of interest, but there are other regions such as Africa, Central and Eastern Europe which remain underserved currently. The South East Asia market is an area where we have direct support and this will be a near term focus on our expansion strategy. Our goal is to grow in areas we are can build relationships with brokers and employee benefit firms, that have the best interest of the customer in mind and have the will offer support our customer service efforts directly with their clients.

How will you achieve success in your strategic vision?

Our focus has been on building a streamlined billing process by accessing local direct bill network providers, that have the expertise to handle claims and to provide the needed infrastructure to properly support our members. In areas where language and cultural differences are barriers we find this as a welcomed service to our members in accessing healthcare providers when needed.

Over the last year, what is the biggest and most important achievement of your company?

Integra Global is constantly seeking ways to be innovative and flexible not only with our members, but with our distribution partners in helping them to deliver a product that best meets the wants and specific needs of their clients. Our representatives were expanding into the Middle East and stressed the importance of a provider that could offer a direct bill network in UAE. Continuing our efforts to support streamlined outpatient treatment we added direct bill access adding a UAE network this year, and our local direct bill network partner has the ability to extend coverage to other areas in the Middle East.

We find it imperative to support not only our members directly but our distribution partners who are in touch with the clients requirements. How will the cost of expatriate healthcare and expat insurance rise in the coming year and why? Increasing pressures on medical inflation are beyond our direct control and have reached double digit levels.

Integra Global has however, incorporated a well designed policy and network utilization to contain costs and to limit our overall price increases to a minimum. As a testament to plan design and our approach we have a track record of keeping price increases to single digit figures for the past 5 years despite the overall rise of medical inflation being higher.

And finally, what role does technology play in your day-to-day operations and within your health, expat or travel insurance plans?

At Integra Global we take the attitude that human touch is at forefront quality customer service and technology is in the background but it remains as a vital component to better servicing and supporting our members. Our investment in technology serves to support and enhance our personal touch not to replace the human interaction which is impetrative in our approach. As the need for medical attention can be at any time technology plays a huge role as we deal with expats around the globe. It is important that our systems are available 24/7 365 days a year.

Web based systems – incorporate with direct bill networks and administrative offices globally – our network partner in China, UAE and the USA have all the customers plans loaded on their system and administered locally providing a seamless infrastructure. Yet this technology works in combination with the human touch – technology is there to service our customer better but not to replace the human element.

Cigna Launches New International Health Insurance Plans for Individuals

Cigna Launches New International Health Insurance Plans for Individuals

  • Cigna introduces new individual private medical insurance product suite which includes Silver, Gold and Platinum options;
  • Gives customers and partners the ability to create unique plans which fit around their unique healthcare needs and budgets, while still benefitting from Cigna’s industry-leading service;
  • Replaces existing Cigna Global Health Options and Advance plans Launch comes in response to customer demand for more choice and more flexible healthcare options.

Cigna, one of the world’s leading international health insurers, is excited to announce the launch of a brand new suite of international health insurance products.

The Cigna Global product suite, which is targeted to expatriates and globally mobile individuals, has been expanded to create a new three-level international health insurance plan. Customers can now benefit from a wider range of plans and customize their cover around their specific healthcare needs and budget. The new healthcare plans – which include Silver, Gold and Platinum cover levels - give customers more flexibility with modular cover options and a choice of cost share and deductible levels. The customer starts out with core International Medical Insurance, which provides cover for all inpatient, specialist and accommodation costs, as well as cover for cancer and psychiatric care. They then choose what is important to them, and add on additional module options which include Outpatient, Health & Wellbeing, Medical Evacuation and Vision & Dental options.

Phil Austin, Head of Global Individual Private Medical Insurance said: “The new plans have been developed in response to customer and broker demand for a wider range of products which span across different market segments. The new plans give us the ability to provide products which suit a greater footprint of customers, and with the added flexibility of teaming a modular approach with deductible and cost share options, it has become really easy for customers to build a plan which is matched to the their unique needs”. The plans were developed after a period of customer and market research which identified a gap in the market for an affordable, high quality, high service healthcare plan.

Austin added: “Our customers appreciated our existing high-service Global Health Options plan which performed well at the upperend of the market. We identified an acute need for additional quality, affordable plans in the middlemarket: for those individuals who are moving abroad but are paying for their plan themselves and want to contain costs but maintain high service levels. The new plans are about giving customers much more choice, so they can get all the cover they need without having to pay for cover they don’t need. After all, if you know you won’t need maternity care, why should you pay for a plan which includes it?”

Key features of the new plans:

  • Choice of Silver, Gold or Platinum options International Medical Insurance core cover as standard, covering inpatient hospital stays, specialist consultants, cancer care etc, and also maternity care on Platinum and Gold plans
  • Flexibility to build a unique plan with a range of additional optional modules, including Outpatient cover; Medical Evacuation; Health & Wellbeing; and Vision & Dental cover
  • Manage premiums with deductible and cost share options on core and Outpatient Comprehensive cancer care as standard
  • No maximum age restrictions
  • Guaranteed renewability

The plans bring a high-service proposition to the mid-market. Customers get access to service levels usually only available on higher-end plans, including:

  • Access to a team of professionals to help navigate the complexities of international health insurance 24/7/365;
  • A global network of over 1 million hospitals, physicians, clinics and health specialists located around the world;
  • Direct claims settlement with providers in most cases, or reimbursement within 5 days.

Ultracare Power Launched For Oil And Gas Industry

Ultracare Power Launched For Oil And Gas Industry

Ultracare Power Launched For Oil And Gas IndustryUltraCare Power a medical insurance plan especially for the oil and gas industry in Asia has been launched today.

The new plan has been developed by international health insurer InterGlobal for brokers with clients in the regional energy sector. UltraCare Power will initially be available in Singapore and eventually rolled out across Asia. UltraCare Power keeps premium levels highly competitive for workers in the energy industry by focusing on core benefits. Two levels of cover are available, UltraCare Power Select and Power Plus. Both give members and their families access to emergency, hospital and out-patient treatment, when and where it is needed.

UltraCare Power Plus also covers dental treatment, wellness benefits and cover for chronic conditions. Emergency medical evacuation and repatriation is available as an option. Most workers have evacuation cover provided by their employers, so making the benefit optional avoids the risk of members paying for a benefit they do not need.

Alistair Dickman, Country Manager and Chief Executive, InterGlobal Singapore said: “Singapore is an important centre for the oil and gas industry in Asia, with thousands of people involved in onshore and offshore production. They need top quality, affordable medical insurance matched exactly to their working lives. Many work offshore or travel extensively to remote locations. There are also a high number of contractors in the industry which means that people need to be able to access quality cover at an affordable premium without joining an employer’s scheme. “

We launched UltraCare Power to give energy workers a real choice when choosing medical insurance. It gives employers, individual contractors and their families the reassurance that they can receive treatment when they need it for a cost effective premium.

“The launch of UltraCare Power is great example of our strategy to focus on developing products to meet the exact needs of local markets. When our intermediary partners told us there was a real demand for a competitive oil and gas IPMI plan across Asia, we went all out to develop a plan that fitted the needs of the industry in the region.”
