Bupa Acquires 49% Of Highway To Health

Bupa today announced that it has acquired 49% of Highway to Health, Inc, a US-based specialist health insurance and services company.

The purchase was completed on 17 December.

Highway to Health is a leading innovator, devising and delivering global solutions as a technology-based specialty health services and insurance company to enable world travelers to conveniently understand, identify, navigate, access and pay for quality healthcare all around the world. Highway to Health specializes in the creation of proprietary online and mobile global health information databases by destination and international economic protection program development, risk assessment, marketing and distribution.

In 2007 and 2008, the company was recognized by Deloitte LLP as a “Technology Fast 500” company based on its historic growth and proprietary web and wireless capabilities. Highway to Health focuses on the development of unique assets, including a directly contracted international network of medical practitioners and facilities, to serve policyholders, benefits managers and others.

The company’s international provider network, in combination with its online and mobile tools and destination oriented databases, supported by its concierge-level 24/7 multi-lingual telephonic assistance center, is referred to as Global Health and Safety Services (GHSS). Highway to Health has enabled users of handheld wireless devices to conveniently access its global databases through its mPassport service.

The mobile applications are being brought to market via numerous channels—including direct to consumer—and represent important new revenue sources, customer retention features and branding opportunities. The company leverages its GHSS web-based and wireless proprietary databases and administrative platform to expand its market share in the international market segments it currently serves.
